Job sharing

Job sharing involves all the duties of a full-time post being divided between two (or more) employees with the salary and hours of work divided between them (not necessarily 50:50).

Some local authorities (LAs) operate a register of teachers who are interested in part-time work or job-sharing.

The Training and Development Agency (TDA) advises that people who are interested in job sharing should partner-up with someone in the same position so as to present themselves to prospective employers as a package. Opinions on job sharing can vary considerably amongst LAs and individual schools.

If you are interested in job sharing, firstly you must look at how it will affect your induction; as a NQT, you should have a maximum of 90 per cent of the average teaching load in order that your induction period can be properly supported.

Contact your LA first to discuss how best to proceed, or speak to individual head teachers, prior to applying for a post, about the possibility of job sharing and furthering your induction.
