BlogsStudents kick Conference into action
ATL met up in Bournemouth this year for its annual conference where members discuss and then pass policy resolutions which ATL’s Executive Committee then implements throughout the following year.
Every year ATL offers 10 student members and 10 ATL NQTs free places to attend and to find out how the union works and be a part of developing education policy for the future – policies that can make a real different as the association work with government and decision makers in the coming year.
This year’s Conference certainly got off to a flying start with our student and newly-qualified members taking centre stage.
Executive members Helen Brook and Jovan Trkulja led a resolution calling for ATL’s continued support for the NUS’s Admission Impossible campaign.
“Your mission, should you choose to accept it,” said Helen Brook, “involves saying NO to soaring levels of debt and saying NO to any attempt to lift the £3,000 cap on fees; saying NO to the marketisation of education; and saying YES to free education for all. You have three minutes to recruit all Conference members and unanimously accept this Resolution. As always, should any member of your team be caught up in or crippled by debt, the government will disavow all knowledge of your actions.”
To cries of assent, members of the new teacher forum took the stage. “It is an appalling way for anyone to start in a profession” declared Ruth Hanson of the increased debt that increases in tuition fees will lead to. Richard Marshall agreed: “ATL is THE education union – let’s show our student members this!”
The group did not fail in their mission as the resolution was unanimously passed. Not a single person in the hall voted against, highlighting ATL’s ongoing commitment to supporting the issues affecting the newest entrants to the profession.
