Health and safety

Health and Safety Executive (HSE)

The HSE is responsible for the regulation of almost all the risks to health and safety arising from work activity in Britain. This site offers lots of advice and information.

Medical Officers of Schools Association

A professional association concerned with the provision of medical care in (mainly independent) schools. Most members are general practitioners who act as medical officers to independent schools in their practice area.

Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents  

Provides information, advice, resources and training. RoSPA is actively involved in the promotion of safety in all areas of life - at work, in the home, and on the roads, in schools, at leisure and on or near water.

Suzy Lamplugh Trust 

The leading authority on personal safety. Its role is to minimise the damage caused to individuals and to society by aggression in all its forms - physical, verbal and psychological.

Independent schools organisations

Girls' Day School Trust  

The Girls’ Day School Trust is a group of 25 independent girls’ schools throughout England and Wales with around 19,500 pupils and 3,500 staff. The Trust is one of the largest charities in the UK and operates as a registered charity which owns its schools and allocates to each an annual operating budget.

The Girls’ Schools Association 

Representing the heads of leading independent schools for girls in the UK, the GSA is the principal voice for the promotion of single sex education for girls.

Represents the interests of the headteachers of nearly 300 schools in England and Wales.

Independent Schools’ Bursars Association

The Independent Schools' Bursars Association (ISBA) exists to support the Bursars of over 800 independent schools that are in membership of ISBA.

Incorporated Association of Preparatory Schools 

The prep schools' headteachers' association serving over 500 independent prep schools in the UK and worldwide.  The site includes information for parents, pupils, governors, staff and others about education in preparatory schools and the services that IAPS provides.

United Church Schools Trust

The Company was founded as an educational charity in 1883 with the principal objective of creating schools that would offer pupils a good academic education based on Christian principles of service and tolerance, with particular reference to the Church of England.

Education and Training Inspectorate, Northern Ireland

Independent Schools Inspectorate

An independent arm of the Independent Schools Council, the inspectorate is approved by the DfES to inspect independent schools.

Joint Council for Qualifications

Comprises of AQA, Edexcel, and OCR, togther with CCEA and WJEC. The site offers reports, news, information and advice for teachers. 

Ofsted

Ofsted is the Office for Standards in Education, Children’s Services and Skills. It regulates and inspects to achieve excellence in the care of children and young people, and in education and skills for learners of all ages.

International

British Council

Builds relationships between people in the UK and other countries and increases appreciation of the UK's creative ideas and achievements.

Citizenship Foundation

An independent organisation dedicated to helping young people understand and confront global issues and challenges by promoting education for international understanding. The site contains lots of resources on citizenship issues.

Education International

A world-wide trade union organisation of education personnel, whose 26 million members represent all sectors of education from pre-school to university.

English-Speaking Union

Promotes international understanding and human achievement through the English language through scholarships, awards, debating and public speaking events and a variety of educational programmes for young people from all over the world.

Fulbright Commission 

Provides information about the USA-UK Fulbright Exchange Programme, and also advice and guidance for anyone considering studying in the USA.

Hispanic and Luso Brazilian Council

A non-political, non-profitmaking organisation that was founded in 1943 to stimulate understanding between Britain, Spain, Portugal and Latin America.

Careers Research and Advisory Centre

A national body based in Cambridge aiming to advance the education of the public, and young persons in particular, in lifelong career-related learning for all.

Institute of Careers Guidance

Helps and supports career guidance professionals to offer impartial, client-focused career guidance.

National Association of Careers and Guidance Teachers

An association for careers staff in schools and colleges in England and Wales.

National Association for Pastoral Care in Education 

Establishes links between all those who have an interest in pastoral care and personal-social education (PSE). NAPCE now has a membership of 1600, which consists of individuals, schools, LEAs and higher education providers who work in support of pastoral care and PSE at all levels.

Young Carers

Produced by the Princess Royal Trust for Carers, this website offers advice for teachers who have pupils who are caring for someone because they are ill, disabled, or have a health problem. There is a section on how to recognise and support young carers, and sections for young carers with information about the issues many of them face.

Education and Learning Wales

Provides information relating to post-16 education and training in Wales for individuals, businesses, communities and learning and research providers.

Higher Education Funding Council for England 

Promotes and funds high-quality, cost-effective teaching and research in universities and colleges in England.

Higher Education Funding Council for Wales

The Council is responsible for securing the provision of facilities for further education and for the administration of funds made available by the National Assembly for Wales in support of further education in FE sector institutions, higher education institutions and sponsored bodies in Wales.

Sixth Form Colleges' Employers' Forum

Skills Funding Agency

Council for Environmental Education

Human Scale Education

Human Scale Education was founded in 1985. It is an education reform movement committed to small scale learning communities based on the values of democracy, fairness and respect. HSE works directly with schools, parents and teachers to promote human scale learning environments where children and young people are known and valued as individuals.

National Education Research Forum

Oversees the development of a strategy for educational research. This website enables you to locate materials on these issues drawn from a wide range of organisations concerned with research across education and training, including NERF itself.

Adventure Activities Licensing Authority

An independent watchdog on the delivery of outdoor adventure activities for young people. The site offers lots of useful links and answers to frequently asked questions.

British Activity Holiday Association

The trade association for private sector providers of activity holidays and courses in the UK. Member centres have all agreed to abide by the BAHA Code of Practice and are committed to high standards of safety, value for money and customer service.
