An independent watchdog on the delivery of outdoor adventure activities for young people. The site offers lots of useful links and answers to frequently asked questions.

 

Advisory Centre for Education (ACE) Ltd

The Advisory Centre for Education (ACE) is an independent advice centre for parents, offering information about state education in England and Wales for 5-16 year olds. It offers free advice on many topics like exclusion from school, bullying, special educational needs and school admission appeals.

 

Association of Colleges (AoC)

A useful resource for lecturers working in further education, with useful sections including news on pay, best practice, resources, news and diary dates.

 

Association for Language Learning

A major subject association for those involved in teaching modern foreign languages at all levels and in all languages

 

Association for Science Education

A professional association for teachers of science, with a broad spread of membership from primary and secondary teachers, to technicians, those involved in Initial Teacher Education and student members.

 

Association of Teachers of Mathematics

Encourages the development of mathematics education so that it is more closely related to the needs of the learner.

 

Association of University Teachers

A trade union and professional association for UK higher education professionals. ATL works closely with the AUT on a number of key education issues.

The national development organisation for literacy and numeracy in England and Wales.

 

British Activity Holiday Association (BAHA)

The trade association for private sector providers of activity holidays and courses in the UK. Member centres have all agreed to abide by the BAHA Code of Practice and are committed to high standards of safety, value for money and customer service.

 

British Association for the Advancement of Science

Promotes understanding and development of science and technology and emphasises their contributions to cultural, economic and social life.

 

British Association for Early Childhood Education

Provides support, advice and information on best practice for everyone concerned with the education and care of young children from birth to eight.

 

British Association of Teachers of the Deaf (BATOD) 

Represents the interests of teachers of hearing-impaired children and young people in the United Kingdom.

 

British Council

British Educational, Communications and Technology Agency (BECTA) 

Works to support the transformation of education through the integration of ICT into learning and teaching, educational institutions and systems. A whole series of resources on ICT and learning are available to teachers, as is a useful ‘Superhighway Safety’ pack on internet safety.

A useful site from the BBC, offering news, entertainment and resources for students and teachers.

 

British Educational Research Association (BERA)

BERA works to promote a vital research culture in education. The website features an update on recent research and offers a number of topical publications.

 

Boarding Schools’ Association

Website of the UK Association promoting and serving boarding education.

 

British Council (London) 

The UK's international organisation for educational opportunities and cultural relations and are represented in 109 countries worldwide. The website has useful sections on learning, science and arts and culture.

 

British Film Institute

A lively site with film interviews, news and features.

 

British Institute of Learning Disabilities

Offers an overview of learning disabilities, with lots of resources and polices.

 

Campaign for State Education

An education campaign group which campaigns for the right of all to the highest quality state education, regardless of race, gender, home circumstances, ability or disability.

 

Careers Research and Advisory Centre Ltd (CRAC) 

A national body based in Cambridge aiming to advance the education of the public, and young persons in particular, in lifelong career-related learning for all.

 

Central Council of Physical Recreation (CCRP)

An umbrella organisation for 270 National Governing Bodies of Sport and Recreation, CCRP promotes, protects and maximises opportunities for sport and recreation in society.

 

Centre for Education Management

Provides school support services, including advice on finances, personnel and education issues. 

 

Centre for Information on Language Teaching and Research (CILT) 

Promotes a greater capability in languages across all sectors of the population. The site offers publications, research, careers and professional development information.

 

Council for Education in World Citizenship (CEWC)

An independent organisation dedicated to helping young people understand and confront global issues and challenges by promoting education for international understanding. The site contains lots of resources on citizenship issues.

 

College of Teachers

Represents the generic concerns of teachers and raises its status in the UK and locally, provides a continuing professional development framework and keeps the profession up to date on important issues affecting every teacher.

 

Commission for Racial Equality

A publicly funded, non-governmental body set up under the Race Relations Act 1976 to tackle racial discrimination and promote racial equality.

 

Council for Environmental Education (CEE) 

CEE's website provides a gateway to a network of organisations with interests in education, and also to the fields of environmental education and education for sustainable development.

 

Council of Specialist Teaching Associations (COSTA) 

Provides an effective means of involving subject teaching associations in decision and policy making, acts a means of communication between associations on their activities and organisation and offers a forum for discussion of matters of common interest to member associations. 

 

Curriculum and Assessment Authority for Wales (ACCAC) 

The National Assembly for Wales's principal advisory body on all aspects of the school curriculum, examinations, assessment and vocational qualifications.

 

Church Schools Company

The Company was founded as an educational charity in 1883 with the principal objective of creating schools that would offer pupils a good academic education based on Christian principles of service and tolerance, with particular reference to the Church of England. 

 

Department for Education and Skills (DfES) 

Contains a news centre, resources, a ‘frequently asked questions’ section and also offers the facility to order DfES publications online. The DfES also runs the Teachernet website, which offers a host of information and resources for teachers on professional development, research, and teaching and learning issues.

The Fulbright Commission 

Provides information about the USA-UK Fulbright Exchange Programme, and also advice and guidance for anyone considering studying in the USA. 

 

General Teaching Council for England

The professional body for teaching in England, providing an opportunity for teachers to shape the development of professional practice and policy, and to maintain and set professional standards.

 

General Teaching Council for Wales

The statutory, self-regulating professional body for teachers in Wales.

 

General Teaching Council for Northern Ireland 

The statutory, independent body for the teaching profession in Northern Ireland.

 

The Geographical Association

Dedicated to promoting the development of geography as a subject. The site offers lots of useful resources including websites and teaching materials.

 

Gingerbread (the national organisation for lone parent families) 

The leading support organisation for lone parent families in England and Wales.

 

Girls' Day School Trust (GDST) 

The Girls’ Day School Trust is a group of 25 independent girls’ schools throughout England and Wales with around 19,500 pupils and 3,500 staff. The Trust is one of the largest charities in the UK and operates as a registered charity which owns its schools and allocates to each an annual operating budget.

 

The Girls’ Schools Association (GSA)

Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE)

Hispanic and Luso Brazilian Council

A non-political, non-profitmaking organisation that was founded in 1943 to stimulate understanding between Britain, Spain, Portugal and Latin America.

 

Historical Association

Aims to further the study, teaching and enjoyment of history at all levels: teacher and student, amateur and professional.

 

Hamilton Oxford Schools Partnership

The Hamilton Oxford Schools Partnership unites fifteen schools, the Hamilton Trust and Oxfordshire LEA as an Education Action Zone focused on teaching and learning.

 

Human Scale Education

Human Scale Education was founded in 1985. It is an education reform movement committed to small scale learning communities based on the values of democracy, fairness and respect. Learning Exchange Online

A knowledge management website from the National College for School Leadership, aimed at helping users to record learning and share best practice. Essentially, it provides a place for networks to share their news, calendars, events, activities, ideas, resources and learning.

Responsible for funding and planning education and training for over 16-year-olds in England.

 

Local Government Association (LGA)

Medical Officers of Schools Association

A professional association concerned with the provision of medical care in (mainly independent) schools. Most members are general practitioners who act as medical officers to independent schools in their practice area.

National Confederation of Parent-Teacher Associations (NCPTA) 

A national charity advancing education by promoting partnerships between home and school and providing support for parent teacher associations.

Office for Standards in Education (OFSTED) 

Provides schools with advice, information and announcements about Ofsted inspections and other activities

 

The Physical Education Association of the United Kingdom (PEA UK) 

Exists to promote, develop and sustain high-quality physical education in the United Kingdom.

 

Qualifications and Curriculum Authority (QCA)

Responsible for standards in education and training, the QCA works with others to maintain and develop the school curriculum and associated assessments, and to accredit and monitor qualifications in schools, colleges and at work.

 

Royal Society of Arts Curriculum Network

The Curriculum Network proposes that education is re-engineered to focus on a new competence-based curriculum. It is hoped that this curriculum initiative will become the main contact point for schools that either want to find out more about, or are ready to introduce, the RSA's competence-based curriculum. 

The Network uses web and email to communicate with its members and is planning a series of seminars and events throughout 2004. There is no fee for joining the Curriculum Network. Instead, Network members pay to attend the various events around the UK, and times will vary to ensure accessibility for all. 

Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA)

Welsh Funding Councils

Young Net

An innovative internet-based network which brings together young people and their teachers from different European countries. It offers a virtual meeting place which enables young people from 8 to 14 years of age to co-operate and communicate in a virtual environment
