Admission Impossible
ATL is supporting 'Admission Impossible - fighting for fair access', an NUS campaign aimed at ensuring that all those with the ambition and the ability are able to enjoy the benefits of higher education.
Recent UCAS figures show that 3.7 per cent less students have confirmed university places than at the same time last year. A stream of research has shown that students from poorer backgrounds are those most likely to be put off higher education by fears of debt.
In the run-up to the independent review of the top-up fees policy in 2008/09, Admission: Impossible will aim to tackle the Government’s continued refusal to recognise that top-up fees will have a dire effect on their stated pledge to widen participation.
The Admission: impossible campaign says:
No to soaring levels of student debt
No to any attempt to lift the £3000 cap
No to the marketisation of education; and
Yes to free education and access for all.
On Sunday, 29 October 2006, ATL joined the Admission Impossible demonstration in London. For more information, see the NUS website. You may also like to read ATL's statement on top-up fees, read out during the demonstration: ATL statement.
