Learning reps

ULRs

So what is a union learning rep? A union learning rep is a new ATL role that specialises in advising and supporting members with their continuing personal and professional development.

A union learning rep (ULR) will work closely with school/college members and management to identify ways to improve access and quality of current provision as well as source new opportunities. The role can include:

  • raising awareness and promoting the value of learning
  • providing information on learning
  • identifying learning needs
  • working with employers and partners to improve access to learning
  • monitoring quality of provision, and supporting equal opportunities in learning

The success of learning reps can be attributed to their placement in schools and colleges working alongside colleagues. They not only have a genuine understanding of current issues affecting staff within a school but are ideally located to listen and offer advice in an impartial and confidential manner.

ATL has around 70 learning reps working in branches, schools and colleges both in the maintained and the independent sector.

Find out more from the What your ULR can do for you page on the main ATL website.

If you would like to become part of the growing network of learning reps please contact Kate Quigley (tel: 020 7782 1558, e-mail:kquigley@atl.org.uk) or Michael Cheetham (tel: 07918195894, e-mail: mcheetham@atl.org.uk).

Learning reps in schools where ATL have recognition now have statutory rights to paid time off to attend courses and to carry out their role. The 3-day training course for learning reps covers principles of CPD and lifelong learning, interview skills, advocacy skills, negotiation skills and working to build successful partnerships.

Not only is this a great opportunity for you to support your colleagues with their learning and training needs, but is great way to further your own continued professional development!
