How we work

Now that you’re a member of the leading education union, you’re probably interested in just how it all works.
Your BRANCH is your local area and will deal with matters affecting you locally. At ATL there are over 100 branches, all split into different geographical areas, so if you ever need any advice or support, there will always be someone close by.
You’ll probably hear the word EXECUTIVE mentioned from time to time. This is a group of members, elected every two years to run ATL, developing every aspect of our policy, work and services. We aim to ensure that every branch is represented by a member on Executive.
Executive operates through a number of COMMITTEES. These look at different aspects of the union such as its finance or human resources, or may take the form of a Specialist Task Group, which will examine a particular educational issue (we recently set one up on faith schools) for a fixed period of time. These committees enable members to focus on particular areas of expertise.
