N30 advice for students and NQs

Along with other public sector unions in the TUC, ATL members are taking strike action today - Wednesday 30 November - to protest against the government's proposed changes to teachers and other public sector workers pensions.

Student members

As a student member, you have not been be balloted and cannot be on strike yourself on 30 November.

If your school is open and you are scheduled to be on placement on the day of a strike, the head teacher may ask you to come in and carry on your teaching practice. You will need to check with your school head teacher nearer the time. However, you should not be expected to cover classes or be teaching classes where the teacher is on strike.

If you are due to be at university or college, although your lectures are likely to be cancelled, we are not asking you to boycott lectures or miss those commitments. You will need to check arrangements with your lecturer or tutor.

If your school is closed on a strike day and you have no other college or university commitments for the 30 November then we welcome you to join in with any locally organised ATL and joint union activities. See below for details of how to take part.

NQ members

Newly qualified members in England, Wales and Northern Ireland and probationers in Scotland who are eligible to be members of the teacher or local government pensions schemes in the dispute can join their colleagues in taking action.

If you're a Teach First or Graduate Teaching Programme trainee you are eligible to be a member of the TPS and, so long as your workplace/employer was notified that there was a ballot, you can take strike action on 30 November and attend a local event. Call our pensions hotline if you need to check if your workplace was notified on 020 7781 1616.

If you have joined ATL as an NQ or standard member since the ballots, you should also be eligible to take part - but please call our pensions hotline to check on 020 7781 1616.
